Virtual Professional Development Webinar Series

WVLPCA is proud to roll-out a professional development webinar series.  Each quarter, WVLPCA will sponsor a virtual presentation by national experts in the counseling field.  The virtual platform allows participants to attend with little disruption to their normal work schedule.

The WVLPCA board is excited to offer all presentations and associated CEUs FREE to members!  This is just one more way WVLPCA can support our members continued growth and development.  Non-members are welcome to attend for a small fee (or join the WVLPCA to take advantage of the free training)!

Register through Pheedloop using the links below.  Webinars will be held over Zoom.  Attendees can access Zoom link on Pheedloop following registration.

Blind Spots and Breakthroughs: Developing Culturally Humble Counselors
Friday, August 21st  1:00 - 2:30 pm (Eastern)

In this first webinar in WVLPCA's new professional development series, Dr. Caverly will be exploring the literature on training culturally humble counselors. Cultural humility requires the ability to remain open and aware to unconscious and semiconscious bias that can result in microaggressions in counseling. As an example of how frequent microaggressions are, Mosher et al. (2017) found that 81% of clients experienced at least one microaggression in counseling. Thus, it is a clear need to train culturally humble counselors that understand how bias can lead to microaggressions.

Furthermore, cultural humility also offers a deeper understanding and awareness of systemic oppression and how systems at the counseling center can be oppressive (e.g., intake paperwork that assumes the client is married to a opposite gender partner). Cultural humility also offers newer LPCs the opportunity to learn about these factors and their own cultural identity.  Finally, practical solutions and activities will be offered to help LPCs gain more insight and to support supervisors train culturally humble supervisees.
